Top 20 best oils for skin and hair: how to choose the right

Cosmetic oils are a large and attractive segment of makeup products, which is a sin not to use, but on one condition: if you know how to choose the right oil and how to use it correctly. We get acquainted with the most effective cosmetic oils and understand how to choose the right one.

Due to their natural origin, all up to one oil is universal: they were not created in a chemical laboratory for any specific purpose, they exist on their own, they are a rich complex of fatty acids and vitamins - and therefore their use is quite widespread. Speaking about each of the oils, we will highlight their most noticeable characteristics, but we must remember that in reality the scope of each oil is much wider.

The most versatile oils, which are included in a huge number of cosmetic formulas and are used for "everything in the world": almond, argan, shea, jojoba, cocoa, coconut. If you are looking for a slightly abstract cosmetic oil that you can apply to the skin and hair, and as an additive to masks and body creams, choose one of the above. But what if you need oil for certain purposes? Read our short dossiers on the most effective, popular and affordable cosmetic oils - and choose the right one!

  1. Argan. Universal: suitable for both dry and normal / combination skin; when applied to hair, it is penetrating, restoring hair along its entire length. This oil and skin are primarily nourished by skin and hair, but without excessive fat content. Very popular oil for adding to hair masks and body creams. It can be used as a base, does not need to be diluted and mixed with something else. Ideal for those who use oil rarely, but prefer expensive, concentrated products.
  2. Jojoba. Despite the liquid state, in fact it is wax. Moderately oily, extremely softening, especially suitable for dry and normal skin with problems (stretch marks, psoriasis, peeling, wrinkles). One of the oils that can be successfully used to care for the skin around the eyes (several times a week, on wet skin). Jojoba oil smoothes hair and makes it silky soft, removing fluffiness and volume. Also as versatile as possible. Very suitable for massage.
  3. Avocado. One of the most fatty oils, viscous and dense, which is why it is used to care for very dry skin and overdried hair, helps to combat peeling and the effect of “pergame” skin. Well softens and restores the hair "killed" by coloring or thermal styling. It is difficult to use solo, so more often it is mixed with a lighter base (almond, peach or grape seed, rice bran).
  4. Macadamia. Macadamia oil with a high content of palmitic acid is neutral - rarely, almost never causes problems and negative skin reactions. It will give the greatest effect when applied to dry skin, smoothing out fine wrinkles and softening the skin to a delicate peach state, but it can also be used by owners of normal, combination skin. But not alone: mix it (10%) with base oil (almonds, rice bran, argan, peach, apricot or grape seed) - and it will show itself in all its glory. Hair smoothes macadamia oil, unravels and softens, makes them shine and beautifully crumble.
  5. Almonds are sweet. If there is a universal cosmetic oil in the world, then this is sweet almond oil. It is suitable for all types of skin and hair, works well alone, solo, is well applied, absorbed and has a complex effect - softens, smoothes, helps maintain moisture. It is ideal as a base (for oil mixtures with essential oils) and massage, due to its light texture. Another plus - it is affordable.
  6. Peach, apricot and grape seed. “Stone” cosmetic oils are close relatives of almond oil in their properties: they are all basic, hypoallergenic, relatively fluid and light, well absorbed. These oils are optimal for massage, especially if you need to massage your whole body, and you need a lot of oil. Suitable for all skin types, rarely used for hair care (most often as a base for oily hair masks). They are good as a kind of “duty” oil for the whole family: husband for massage, wife to care for the neckline and neck, children - to lubricate small peeling.
  7. Hazelnut. Favorite oil of all owners of oily and combination, as well as problem skin. Hazelnut oil softens and tones such skin - and at the same time does not add oilyness, on the contrary, helps it to remain dull and smooth for as long as possible. It slightly narrows the pores during systematic use (2-3 times a week at night instead of cream on wet skin), does not cause inflammation and rashes, absorbs well and quickly, leaving matte skin that is pleasant to the touch.
  8. Rosehip Seed. Rosehip seed oil has a record vitamin content, so it works great on dry, dehydrated and aging skin. An important property: rosehip seed oil helps restore skin damaged by UV radiation, so that after a beach holiday it is simply irreplaceable. Smoothes, softens, fills the skin with radiance. Suitable for eye area. You can use solo, and in mixtures with other oils. You can also add a drop of this oil to your serving of evening cream from time to time.
  9. Wheat germ. Concentrated and luxurious wheat germ oil is excellent for two cases: for the prevention of stretch marks in pregnant women (when applied regularly to problem areas with massage, it gives very good results) and for the care of aging, dry skin that is losing elasticity. This pleasant and moderately thick oil is applied without any problems and shows itself very well in the process of makeup. It can be used both solo and in mixtures.
  10. Rice bran. Rice bran oil is not only universal in application, but also suitable for the most sensitive and delicate skin, so there are practically no problems with its use. This is a good base oil for all skin types, including age-related, convenient for preparing mixtures and for independent use. It can be used for massage. In texture, it is very gentle and pleasant, it is well distributed on the skin and at the same time does not leave a feeling of greasy film.
  11. Evening primrose. Evening primrose oil is a kind of anti-aging concentrate: it is added to mixtures and creams in a volume of not more than 10-20%, while receiving a comprehensive anti-age effect. This oil smoothes out fine wrinkles, slightly brightens age spots, improves elasticity, softens the skin, restores its smoothness and delicate texture. It is ideal to mix it with a base oil, such as argan or apricot kernel, and use it as an evening cream or mask several times a week.
  12. Green coffee. Valuable green coffee oil is the absolute No. 1 for skin care around the eyes. It's all about its tonic and lifting properties, thanks to which this oil not only softens and nourishes the skin, but also tightens it, helps you get rid of dark circles and sagging eyelids. Rich and quite thick in texture, it is used both solo and in combination with other oils. If applied to the skin around the eyes, it is advisable to mix it with jojoba oil. By the way, green coffee oil is often part of high-quality natural creams for the eyes and face in general.
  13. Broccoli. Another specific oil: broccoli is known for its ability to protect the ends of hair from cross-section. Rub a drop of broccoli oil in your palms and apply it to the ends of your wet hair after washing - and do not rinse! After a week or two of use, you will notice how much more lively, elastic the previously dry tips became. In addition, broccoli oil is excellent for treating dry skin and the skin around the eyes. It has a light specific smell, inspiring thoughts about the vegetable department of the supermarket.
  14. Tamanu. A unique oil that is well suited for the care of problematic skin prone to inflammation, acne, rashes. This oil relieves inflammation, helps fight acne and traces of it, does not oily the already oily and combination skin. It has good healing properties: it helps to smooth scars, remove darkening and tubercles after acne, burn marks and the like. Tamanu oil is also used for skin care with eczema and psoriasis.
  15. Sasanqua. A gentle and pleasant, light oil that is used solo to care for dry and normal, age-sensitive, sensitive skin that has lost its tone and elasticity. Suitable for the eye area. Feeling neutral, well distributed and quickly absorbed. Sasanqua oil does not give a feeling of excess fat and heaviness on the skin, gently and imperceptibly cares for it.
  16. Neem. A thick oil whose aroma can hardly be called pleasant, but it is tolerated by those who value it for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Pimples, allergic rashes, psoriasis, eczema, inflammation - all this helps the oil, and not necessarily in its pure form: it can be mixed with other oils, and with basic natural creams.
  17. Solid oils (butter) are used in the same way as liquid cosmetic oils, but there is one caveat: they harden at an average room temperature, and to transfer them to a more convenient liquid state, it is enough to either slightly heat them in a water bath or a portion of oil hold in palms (it will melt at body temperature). The most common and easy-to-use solid oils:
  18. Shi (shea). Hypoallergenic universal solid oil, which is used literally everywhere; when added, it is very often present in natural cosmetics, including in children’s products, products for sensitive skin, lip balms, face and body creams. An important plus: shea butter has a zero level of comedogenicity, so it is suitable for owners of oily, problematic, combination skin with enlarged pores. A jar of shea butter in your home will serve a variety of purposes: as body oil, lip balm, nutrient for dry areas, masks for dry hair, and so on.
  19. Coconut. A world-class oil hit: in some regions it is used directly in liters for skin and hair care. Coconut oil, indeed, is quite versatile: it helps maintain skin hydration, softens the skin (it has average comedogenicity, so it is better not to use it for owners of oily and reactive skin) and smoothes, improves its elasticity. Suitable even for sensitive areas - lips and eyelids. Indispensable as a natural hair mask (apply for an hour before washing, rinse with natural shampoo). A drop of coconut oil can be applied to already washed hair as a natural indelible conditioner, but it is important not to overdo it. And the cherry on the cake: coconut oil is very pleasant in texture, translucent, delicate, with a light coconut aroma, mmm!
  20. Cocoa. Cocoa butter is primarily known to all lovers of good chocolate, but it is also used very widely in cosmetology. Of the above butter, cocoa butter is the hardest, thickest and most oily, so it is most often used to care for lips and dry skin of the face and body. It is convenient to mix it with liquid vegetable oils in order to slightly reduce its density, however, cocoa butter in its pure form is perfectly applied and absorbed, it can be used for massage. For hair care (as a mask), cocoa butter is rarely used and only at the ends, and in mixtures with lighter oils. If some areas of the skin disturb you with increased dryness (heels, elbows, knees), then cocoa butter perfectly nourishes and softens them, eliminating peeling and dryness.

Important! Do not forget about the main rule for applying oils: do not use them non-stop (optimally 2-3 times a week), apply oils and oil mixtures to skin that is slightly moist after showering or cleansing your face. Carefully monitor the reaction of the skin to certain oils.
